Your Licence

All provisional license holders (ie those displaying L Plates) must take a Compulsory Basic Training course before riding a moped (50cc) or a motorcycle up to 125ccon the road. When you complete the CBT your Certificate (DL196) is valid for two years from the date of issue and allows you to ride with L Plates but not carry passengers. Should the certificate expire the Compulsory Basic Training course must be retaken unless of course you have passed your moped or motorcycle test.

You will need a valid CBT before you can apply for any practical riding test howwever you can take a Theory Test before your CBT.

With a full car licence you will still need to take a Compulsory Basic Training course before riding on the road. (Unless you passed your car test before 1st Feb 2001 when you do NOT need a CBT for a moped 50cc but do if the bike is more than 50cc) With a full licence and a valid CBT certificate you will be allowed to ride up to 125cc with L Plates but not carry passengers. Should the certificate expire and you are riding a bike bigger than 50cc the Compulsory Basic Training course must be retaken unless of course you have passed your moped or motorcycle test.

You will need a valid CBT before you can apply for any practical riding test however you can take a Theory Test before your CBT.
